RWANDA, I REMEMBER
Synopsis
Since the 1970s, Quebec and Canada have welcomed many Rwandan immigrants. Scholars came to study and stayed. Others were fleeing an oppressive regime. Then the '94 genocide occurred with its share of new arrivals, survivors and refugees with sometimes troubled pasts, including notorious criminals. While in Rwanda we are witnessing national reconciliation efforts, here the Hutu and Tutsi communities live in parallel. The associations are duplicated, like the activities, the festivals, the commemorations, which does not help to dissipate this climate of distrust and latent hatred.
Uprooted, a little lost in a vast, cold territory located 10,000 kilometers from their native land, these expatriates are attempting a difficult fresh start. In this film, they tell us about their trauma, of a despoiled host country, of a sometimes unfair appropriation of the status of victim. Some will even try to jump the wall so that a dialogue, even painful, can finally begin.
Realization:
André Saint-Pierre
